Holy hell...

Well, I don't say this not because I'm stupid or anything, but because I had a really disastrous lapse of judgement today. The short story: I got in a car accident when I tried to start driving on my own.

The long story: At the insistence of my parents and fresh off of some driving lessons, I tried driving their car to the local library and back. Now then, driving to the library was a breeze, aside from a minor hiccup involving having to compensate for not remembering to turn left. I even managed to park within the lines at the lot! Driving back home, on the other hand, was where I screwed up royally. I was at the intersection of three roads and was ready to turn left onto the homeward road. When the light turned green, I wasted no time attempting to make the turn.

Except it wasn't a green arrow. In fact, the light was meant as a signal for the cars driving straight across.

And I didn't realize how horrible a decision that was until I saw the other car--the one with the right of way--try to cross while I was in the intersection! Only moments later, I rear-ended that car. If it weren't for the airbags, I could have died right then and there. In any case, I was very frightened about the prospect: I had not only damaged my parent's car but also the other one, putting its occupants in danger as well. Thankfully, no-one was seriously injured (though the other car's driver and passenger were taken to the hospital just to be sure), and I physically suffered no more than a bruise on my left thumb. Yet it was still terrifying; I had to deal with the local law while far away from home, knowing I've unintentionally endangered someone's life at that moment.

Well, my mom and I managed to get the car back home, but it's going to need repairs before any of us can drive it again. As for me, I'll have to answer to the courts for this lack of discretion soon. All I can hope for now is that everyone is safe and that I haven't caused them any more grief than I did in that accident.

...I should probably let my parents do the driving for now.
